Description: Wel-Cote Topping Joint Compound is formulated to be the ultimate finish coat to any drywall job. Topping compound can also be used for applying simple textures to walls and ceilings.

Preparation, Application and Storage: Wel-Cote Topping Joint Compound is ready to use as it comes from the container, and should not be thinned when covering corner bead or nail heads. If thinning is desired, or when using mechanical tools to finish, add clean water in half-pint increments with no more than 1½ pints added per 62 lb. container. This avoids over thinning which could cause edge cracking, poor adhesion and excessive shrinkage. If any liquid is separated in the container, stir contents thoroughly. Do not mix with any other material. Apply over completely clean, dry and dust-free surfaces. Allow each coat to dry completely before applying another. Topping compound, surface and air temperatures of no less than 55° F must be maintained in working areas until joints are completely dry. At 75° F and relative humidity of 50%, allow approximately 24 hours between applications. Keep container covered and stored at room temperature in a dry location. Protect from freezing and exposure to extreme heat or direct sunlight.

Sanding: Wet sanding is recommended to eliminate dust and scuffing of joint tape and paper. When the compound is dry, use moist sponge to remove high spots and imperfections. Dry sanding should be done with a 150 (or finer) grit sandpaper or a 220 grit abrasive mesh cloth. Wear goggles or safety glasses and NIOSH-approved dust mask.

Decorating and Texture Finishes: Before painting, texturing or applying wallpaper or vinyl wall coverings, a good quality drywall primer must be correctly applied. Surfaces must be clean, dry and not glossy. Strictly follow directions of painting and decorating material manufacturers. To achieve different textures with Wel-Cote All Purpose Joint Compound, apply an ample amount of compound and use a paintbrush, stipple roller, trowel or sponge to create a decorator design.

Finishing Wallboard Joints:

1. After the first coat of compound is completely dry (24 hours) apply a thin coat of Topping compound and feather out to a 3" to 4" width on each side of the taped joint. Apply a second coat to nail heads.

2. Allow the preceding coat to dry and apply another thin coat of Topping compound, feathering out to a total width of about 8" on each side of the joint. Apply final coat to nail heads.

3. When completely dry, at least 24 hours after final coat, sand smooth.

Finishing Inside Corners: Apply compound to both sides of corner. Crease tape and embed. Apply a thin coat on both sides of tape. When dry, apply a second coat to one side only. Let dry, then finish the other side. When dry, sand until smooth.

Finishing Outside Corners: After the first coat is completely dry, apply a second coat of Topping compound 6"- 10" wide applied on each side of corner.
