Description: Wel-Cote Water Seal is intended for sealing and decorating concrete, stucco, common or unglazed brick, concrete blocks, haydite blocks, cinder blocks, pumice blocks and other porous masonry surfaces that will readily accept water. Water Seal may be used either inside or out – above or below ground. This material is NOT intended for use on floors, gypsum plaster or magnisite stucco

Surface Preparation:

WALLS: The surface should be clean and porous. All dirt, dust and loose particles must be removed with a wire brush. All grease, form oil, rubber base or oil paint must also be removed. Surfaces previously coated with cement base paint may be repainted with Water Seal if they’ve weathered sufficiently, or if etched with a 20% solution of muriatic acid. Wear rubber gloves and eye protection when working with acid. Walls should be washed with clear water after solution has been left on the surface for about 1 hour or until the acid is completely dissipated. New concrete walls should be allowed to cure and dry completely before Water Seal is applied. Large breaks and cracks should be cleaned and routed out, soaked with water and patched with hydraulic cement such as Wel-Cote Masonry Plug or a mixture of 1 part Water Seal to 2 parts clean, sharp sand mixed to a paste consistency.

NEW/UNPAINTED SWIMMING POOLS: The surface must be clean and free from all foreign matter. Smoothly trowled or dense concrete must be etched with a 20% solution of muriatic acid. Wear rubber gloves and eye protection when working with acid. Brush on the acid solution with a long handled brush and allow solution to remain on the surface for at least 4 hours.

PREVIOUSLY PAINTED SWIMMING POOLS: Remove all previous coats of paint by sand blasting, or other equally effective methods down to the original surface. Then proceed as above.

FISHPONDS: Use Wel-Cote Water Seal only if the pond is new concrete or block construction that has never been painted. Surface preparation is the same as for a new/unpainted swimming pool.

CISTERNS: Water Seal is intended for surfaces that will readily accept water, and generally should not be used where previous treatment has been made with anything other than cement paint. Surface preparation is the same as for a new/unpainted swimming pool.

Mixing: Mix Water Seal in a clean container at the rate of about ½ pint clean water to 1 pound Water Seal. Add water gradually to powder while stirring with a paddle. Allow mixture to stand about 20 minutes and stir again before using. IMPORTANT: Additional water may be necessary to bring mixture to a good paint consistency. Do not re-temper. Should Water Seal thicken while using, re-stir and add additional water to maintain this consistency. The material should flow easily with out leaving brush marks.

CISTERNS: Mix Wel-Cote Water Seal as indicated above, adding about 1 pound of fine white sand for every 2 pounds of Water Seal for the first coat.

Application:

WALLS: Using a water hose with a fine spray wet the surface thoroughly before each coat. Wet only as much area as can be coated before drying. It should be damp, but free from running water. On extremely rough or porous surfaces, apply Water Seal with a masonry brush using a scrubbing action to insure maximum coverage and penetration. On smoother surfaces and second coats, flow on Water Seal with a full brush, as you would paint.

SWIMMING POOLS: Apply two coats of Wel-Cote Water Seal as directed above. Re-wet both coats several times with a very fine spray of water to keep it moist during the curing and bonding process.

FISHPONDS: Application is the same as for a new/unpainted swimming pool. Water Seal is non-toxic after it is completely cured (hard and non-chalking). Before using, completely and thoroughly clean to remove any loose particles of material or foreign matter that may have collected during the application process.

CISTERNS: With the exception of the added sand for the first coat, application is the same as for a Fishpond. If Water Seal has not been allowed to completely cure before filling the cistern, a slight taste will be noticeable in drinking water. Drain all water and allow the cistern to completely dry before filling again.

SPRAY APPLICATION: Use orifice size slightly smaller than 1/8" with enough air pressure to pump material good. Spray with atomizing set low. Do not allow Water Seal to set up in the hose. Clean hoses by running water through them if not used, even for a short time (such as going to lunch).

Equipment: Wel-Cote Water Seal Brush is preferable for rough stucco and porous surfaces. The Wel-Cote Coater brush is recommended for smooth surfaces.

SPRAY APPLICATION: Use Binks #18, 18D or equivalent spray gun.

Cure time: Allow to set overnight (or about 12 hours).

Then re-wet with a very fine spray of water to keep damp. Cure for 72 hours before applying a second coat. After about 7 days, the surface can be painted with any good paint. Paint a test panel first to determine whether the surface is completely cured. If not cured it may prove harmful to liquid paint.

Coverage (approximate): Covers 5 to 15 square feet per pound for the first coat and from 15 to 25 square feet per pound for the second coat depending on the porosity of the surface to be painted. All new or severely weathered surfaces should receive two coats.
